Help - Search Engine Optimization

If you've ever used a search engine to find a business you understand the importance of being in the top few search results. While there is a whole science built around optimizing a web site to make it appear at the top of the list. We won't go into a lot of the more advanced techniques here, but there are simple things that anyone can do to improve the search engine performance of their site.

Any search result list is based on keywords. If you are looking for a plumber in Denver, Colorado, you might enter "Plumber Denver" in Google. this will return a list of plumbers in Denver, just like you expect it would. Google returns these results in order based on a ranking that it gives to them for the keywords you entered. The site at the top probably uses the words "Plumber" and "Denver" many times in the content of its site.

Think about what your customers search for. If you are a gas station in Spokane, WA, you may want to make sure you use the words "gas station", "Spokane" and "Washington" in your site often. Make sure you use the keywords in sentences, headings, and page titles. Don't just use the keywords by themselves, as this will not work.

When doing search engine optimization, the best thing to do is make all your keywords flow naturally into your site. Don't use them so much it seems forced. When it comes down to it, your site should be built to serve your customers, not just rank well in Google. If your site has good content, it should rank well naturally.
